Death's-Head Hawkmoth Trivia...
*No they aren't made up, these are a real species of moth!
*They are of the genus Acherontia and there are three species of Death's-Head Hawkmoth within this genus.
*They are part of the Order Lepidoptera
*They get their name from the human skull shaped marking on their thorax
*Caterpillars can reach up to 15cm long and they like potato leaves
*They pupate in the ground in little egg shaped cocoons.
*They are nocturnal
*They have been associated with various superstitions for centuries due to their rather ominous markings
*They can make a chirping sound when threatened!
*Adults of all three species are commonly observed raiding beehives of different species of honey bee. They can move about in hives without being disturbed because they mimic the scent of the bees and are not recognised as intruders.
*They have been referenced in art and literature by such notables as, William Holman Hunt, Edgar Alan Poe and Salvador Dali and Luis Bunuel (in the 1929 short film Un Chien Andalou)
